The Lost Way
Schwarz, Matt

Musician Matt Schwarz is an accomplished musician, with talents running through a wide variety of instruments and styles. His solo offering (recorded prior to the release of Sarabande's first CD, is a mixture of styles and vocals that doesn't always work.

The opening track, "Robin Hood & Little John", is a new arrangement of a traditional Robin Hood ballad. Schwarz's vocals come off very staccato and a bit forced, even while the instrumental music is tight and well done. The instrumental portions of the song are wonderful and tight, but as soon as the lyrics begin the track bogs itself down.

One track is particularly jarring, "Scarborough Faire" just doesn't work. This song, best known for the Simon & Garfunkle version, has been recorded numerous times by a wide variety of artists. One can certainly applaud Schwarz for trying to record something different, but it falls flat. While the instrumental portions are clean and simple, they are very repetitive in nature and rapidly feel bland and overused. When one adds vocals that just aren't on key and the track just fails.

That isn't to say that there aren't good points to this CD though. "Farewell and Fare-Thee-Well" is poignant. The recording values on the track aren't top-notch, but the song itself is strong enough to carry the listener past that.

Overall, Matt Schwarz shows himself to be a strong and gifted instrumentalist, however his vocal work on the album isn't strong enough to match the rest of the music.

The CD is available for $12 from CD Baby.
