Dennis Gilmore The third album from Dennis Gilmore is filled with old Irish favorites. Drawing upon his time spent performing with Charley MacGowan, Dennis Gilmore has put a CD that is more polished than his earlier offerings. The CD is filled with such well known songs as "Whiskey in the Jar" and "Wild Mountain Thyme". Of course, any album of traditional tunes is taking a big chance these days, especially if there is no twist or 'kick' to it. The song on this CD with the 'kick' is "The Scotsman". The addition of two additional verses at the end serves to remind folks why this song is so popular while adding a nice bit of additional humor at the end. "Jug of Punch" falls flat, sounding a bit rushed. The verse and chorus run together almost without break. Now, doing something new with a traditional tune is always risky however this song could certainly have used more of Gilmore's guitar work as opposed to less. In the end, this track comes off somewhat lacking. The album also has a few songs that are rarely heard. "Fire in the Glenn" has always been a fine tune. Soft, sad and mournful this song strikes a chord, deep within the listener. As rarely as this song is recorded, the CD is worth purchasing for this track. If you are unfamiliar with this haunting tune, you certainly are in for a treat. The CD certainly could've used a bit more punch but overall, Old Stories is just that, a good solid CD of well known festival favorites.
