Queen's Gambit

This, the latest release from Queen's Gambit serves to show exactly how far they have come from their first release. The recording quality is superb and the selection of bawdy tunes is a fun addition to any collection.

"Bell Bottom Trousers" is a delightfully sweet sounding rendition of an old favorite. The addition of the hornpipe as a musical bridge is another nice touch. While the song isn't overly bawdy, there is something almost delightfully perverse about hearing it sung so sweetly.

The "Moose Song" is another tune that is ingrained into the collective Ren consciousness and it is hard to spend much time around faires without eventually hearing this tune, often after hours depending how bawdy the version. Again, the song is deceptively sweet sounding. Most normally bawdy songs aren't focused on harmonies and the richness of tune that Queen's Gambit delivers.

Taking things a bit more up-tempo, "Johnny Be Faire" is a quickly paced rendition of another faire favorite. The song itself goes by fairly quickly, but it is crisp, fun and serves as a great lead-in for "Black Leather Band".

"Black Leather Band" was a pleasant surprise. This bondage themed version of "Black Velvet Band" is a refreshing take on a popular Irish tune. The change of lyrics is only part of the fun, this song including another fun musical bridge. This is the sort of thing that sticks in a person's brain for a long, long time.

It is rare that one can say that an album of bawdy songs shows off how much a musical group has matured, but this is truly the case. Each CD from Queen's Gambit has improved on the last but this latest CD goes quite a ways to expand upon their reputation as a well-loved festival act. In the two years since their freshman debut, Queen's Gambit has released a true breakout album that is a must purchase. The CD is available for $15 from CD Baby.
